SAHRAWI OBSERVATORY FOR NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Protecting Natural Resources. Defending Environmental Rights. Advancing Justice.

SONREP is an independent Sahrawi observatory dedicated to monitoring, researching and advocating for the protection of natural resources, environmental rights and sustainable development in Western SaharWe work to document environmental challenges, monitor economic and corporate activities, produce independent research and strengthen international awareness of the relationship between natural resources, environmental protection, human rights and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.

Natural Resources, Environmental Protection and Justice Are Connected

Western Sahara possesses significant natural resources and environmental potential. Its territory includes extensive fisheries, phosphate reserves, agricultural areas, coastal and marine ecosystems, wind and solar potential, and increasing interest in renewable energy and green hydrogen development.

At the same time, decisions concerning the exploitation, management and development of these resources cannot be separated from the unresolved political status of Western Sahara and the right of the Sahrawi people to determine their own future.

SONREP was established to contribute to independent research, monitoring, documentation and advocacy concerning these issues.

Our work is based on a fundamental principle:

Sustainable development cannot exist without justice, participation, accountability and respect for the rights of the people concerned.
